Turning Failure Into Success

How many times have you tried something and not succeeded? Believe me, I am a living testament to the motto, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

But so many times, the fear of failure becomes a block, stopping people from going after what they really want in life. If we don’t believe in ourselves or what we are doing, we can get scared. Without faith, fear is inevitable.

So first things first: You absolutely must believe in what you are working toward, and you also must believe in yourself!

Success begins within ourselves. We have to see it in our mind’s eye and truly envision what we want to achieve. That’s when you can begin a plan.

Here are six tips for turning that failure into success:

1. Look back for understanding.

If we fail at something, we want to crawl in a hole and just forget about it. But the only way to move forward is to evaluate what happened - both the good and bad. Self-evaluation is key. Be honest with yourself. We can easily learn from our experiences - isn’t that what life is all about?

2. Communicate and ask for feedback.

Always aim for feedback. If we feel like we failed, we don’t always like to face the reasons things may have gone awry. But it’s so important to see the whole picture - and sometimes we can learn from the way others see us. Feedback, both positive and negative, can help us grow. People always respect a straightforward communicator.

3. Dig deep!

Get to the source of what you really want for your life. Sometimes we set goals for ourselves, and no matter how hard we try, we don’t achieve it. But if you re-evaluate your goals and ask yourself, “Why do I want to achieve this goal?”, then the answer will be much clearer. For example, if you want to lose weight and diets always fail you, ask yourself why you want to lose weight. Perhaps the answer will create a clearer pathway for you to achieve your actual goal.

4. Prepare, prepare, prepare.

Being prepared by turning your vision into a plan - and turning your plan into action - will help ensure your success. Since we can learn so much from our experiences, what one person might consider “failures” another might consider tools for learning. Take these tools to help build your plan and put it into action.

5. Ask yourself key questions.

Questioning helps to uncover simple steps one can take to create change. Ask yourself things like: How will I achieve what I want? What obstacles must I overcome or what potentially might step in the way? How will I hold myself accountable? What support do I need? What education or training is necessary?

6. Stay positive and focused!

Don’t let a little bump in the road throw you completely off course. Remember, it is your attitude that determines your level of success. Now that you have a clear picture of what your goal really is, you can create a strong action plan based on your self-evaluation and feedback from those involved. Attitude is everything.
